5 Things I Learned After Being Sick for a Week as a Holistic, Evidence-Based Mental Health Therapist

5 Things I Learned After Being Sick for a Week as a Holistic, Evidence-Based Mental Health Therapist

By Carolina Oviedo-Munoz on Jun 26, 2025

1) Slowing Down to Heal:

Being sick forced me to stay home, rest, and eventually slow down. I found myself wanting to bounce back quickly, to return to my usual routine: workouts, work, coffee dates, travel. But my body asked me to pause. In that stillness, I realized how much I was living in the future, always feeling anxious, and thinking, “what’s next”. This helped bring me back to the present and realign my values to actions of living slowly and more intentionally.

2) Letting Myself Be Cared For:

It is humbling when you’re sick. It’s a gentle [at times] reminder that I’m human; I have limits, and I can’t do it all. And that’s okay! It was a time to ask for help, and more importantly, to receive it. I leaned on my husband and family to care for me, and it felt incredible. Just because we’re adults doesn’t mean we stop needing people. In fact, allowing ourselves to be supported is a form of strength, not weakness.

3) Focusing on What I Can Control:

We all wish it was possible, but we unfortunately can’t will ourselves to get better. No matter how many times you tell yourself, “just heal already”, you can’t override the body’s natural healing timeline. So, I shifted my focus to what was in my control—rest, hydration, and eating nourishing foods. It wasn’t about doing more, but about supporting my body as it did what it’s wired to do: heal.

4) Support Comes in Many Forms:

When I noticed my symptoms weren’t improving on their own, I reached out to my doctor and took the appropriate medication to support my healing. As a holistic, evidence-based therapist, I believe in the power of both natural remedies and medical support. Plus, being Mexican comes with a lot of home remedies—caldo de pollo, anyone?. Honoring both was part of my healing journey.

5) From Frustration to Gratitude:

There were moments I felt irritated and impatient with myself for being sick and so fatigued. That mindset only made things harder. So I chose to reframe it: instead of fighting the process, I practiced gratitude for this unexpected season of rest. I thanked my body for all the work it was doing behind the scenes to keep me strong. Healing, I’ve learned, feels softer when we meet it with kindness instead of resistance.
