Hello! I'm Maia (she/her), and I am an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC). Looking into starting therapy can sometimes feel very complex! There may be pressure to "do this right", or to find the therapist that feels right for you. It might also feel really exciting, and energizing to think of your potential future in this space. I hope to develop and foster a space that can help you be authentic with yourself, and however you feel about beginning this process. Even if I have the trainings and knowledge of therapy, you are always the expert in your own life. I look to combine both of these parts of the therapeutic relationship, to develop a truly healing space for you. One where we can start slow, and begin to uncover the deeper parts of you who feel ready to be seen and understood by you. Therapy can be a lot of things - scary, exciting, and vulnerable. There is no "perfect" way to be in this space, we can take this day by day!
I love working with...
I have a deep passion to work with women's wellness, perinatal mental health, children and teens, and overall exploration of systemic oppression and it's impact on our mental health and identities. At my core, I am a feminist-based therapist who explores systems of oppression and barriers that increase feelings of depression, anxiety, and isolation, in order to empower my clients to feel less shame and empowered to make change in your life that will best connect with you.
Some of my favorite approaches include...
As a clinical counselor, I draw from several approaches to find the best approach to support you as an individual in this space. These include Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Gottman Therapy for couples. The most important aspect of therapy is feeling safe enough to get vulnerable. I aim to create a unique space to build this part of our work together, to support you in exploring your goals in session.
How I help...
My approach to therapy is to take things slowly at the beginning. We learn and explore different concepts that can support us in improving our mental health. We take the time to really uncover the foundation of your life, and how these elements are impacting you today. I aim to be a personable therapist, so you can find trust in the person sitting across the room from you! I invite curiosity into the room, to truly begin to understand all the parts of you that make you, you. I gently challenge my clients to begin to explore these parts of themselves, and learn how to provide themselves and others the compassion we all deserve.
I believe...
...that therapy is inherently political, and we are all trying to survive systems we are born into. As a BIPOC woman, I recognize that our identities make up who we are, and how we experience the world around us. I aim to support clients and our community in unlearning systems that increase our own shame, so we can free ourselves to live the lives we deserve.
What it's like in session with me
We will start our journey slow, and at the pace that feels right for you. Everyone is unique and this world, and deserves to feel seen in every space, especially in therapy. We will explore what has brought you in to therapy, what you would like to work towards, and both what has been feeling hard, and what has been feeling good in your life. We can develop a flow that feels most natural for you, one where we can explore weekly life, while also still having time to focus on our bigger goals together. We can learn and explore new coping skills to support emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and overall wellness in your life. We will always follow your pace with where our journey takes us.
