Take It In and Let It Go

Take It In and Let It Go

By Isabela Romero on Mar 24, 2026

As I just finished a power breathing practice, I can still feel the tingles in my body, the clarity in my mind, and the focused energy I was hoping to tap into before writing this article. It’s amazing what 8 minutes of intentional breathing can do for me… and for you.

The act of breathing is such a beautiful metaphor for life itself, taking it in with every inhale and letting go with each exhale. Life is about having the most fulfilling human experience: overcoming difficulties with resilience, savoring joyful moments with ease, feeling powerful through our productive endeavors, learning to grow, and loving deeply. Each moment has a unique rhythm of breath: slow and deep, fast and sharp, shallow and short. The way we breathe carries information about our physical experience of the world, which we then label as emotions. We go through life underestimating one of the most powerful tools for accessing emotional and physical shifts: our breath.

Breathwork is not your typical still meditation; it is conscious physical activation. Specific breathing patterns activate different pathways in the brain to enhance energy and focus or induce calm and relaxation. Breathing itself has both a sympathetic component (inhale) and a parasympathetic component (exhale), creating a natural dance between activation and regulation. Playing with the duration, intensity, and rhythm of the breath can induce altered mental states that can feel like a natural high.

I utilize different breathing techniques with my clients to support regulation before and after sessions. I also invite deep breaths during more tender moments, guiding them to connect with their present experience. Breathwork can be practiced individually or in community, offering a powerful way to reconnect with yourself and others.
